Truck would not start?

So we have a 1989 ford f150, and today it was extremely cold (-5 with out windchill) the truck wouldnt start. so I put it in neutral and pushed it to the front of our drive, so I could get our other car out. After pushing it, the thing started? can anyone explain the mechanics behind this
